The girl next door
A film that was slammed by critics when it released but has since then gained sort of cult following. The reason it worked — especially among guys — is because the plot of the film is every living man’s dream while growing up. Yes, the film is a pure escapist pleasure. But that’s where the fun lies. People genuinely feel attached to this movie.
The first reason for the attachment is the story and its depiction because it is shown how a boy falls in love with a girl and how he feels after falling in love with that girl, you can simply relate with that scene where time just passes and you can’t notice it.
The second reason is that the girl Elisha Cuthbert is so damn cute that you can’t get her out of your mind. I have seen this movie more than 2 or 3 times (which is very much for me because I never watch a movie intentionally more than once) just to see that smile on her face.
The literal translation of Superbad is extremely wrong, so it doesn’t have anything to do with the meaning of the title of the movie since in the title Superbad is used as ‘Badass’.
Starting with the concept ‘bad’ it means wrong, weak etc, but in the US it’s also a synonym for cool,
Its very common that in the states the concept ‘Superbad’ is attributed to rebels or the ‘bad’ boys; that’s why the movie is named Superbad, the characters are trying to become the bad boys and fit in.
After being rejected by every school he applies to, a high school slacker opts to create his own institution of higher learning, the South Harmon Institute of Technology, on a rundown piece of property near his hometown. They even create a fake Web site, hire a friend’s uncle to pose as the dean. Soon many other rejects try to gain admittance to their university leading to a hilarious outcome.
Four college friends embark on an 1800-mile road trip to retrieve an illicit tape mistakenly mailed to a girlfriend. As the premise of the film suggests, this movie is one hell of a fun-filled ride. Too bad, the critics dismissed the film. It is one of the better guilty pleasures. Todd Phillips, the director, would later go on to make even bigger successful films like Hangover.
Again, a film that critics absolutely hated, but young audiences loved. It has sex; it has guy jokes, and it has some really crazy moments of fun — all you need to make a good sex comedy. The bonus is the exotic locales of Europe where the film has been shot.
The forty-year-old virgin
Sex has been so widely desacralized that believing a 40-year old virgin is hard for the conscience. Andy, our virgin protagonist, is a geek, know-it-all who works for an electronics store. The braggadocio about sex, the cliched sex-to-love theme makes the movie predictably sly. The movie follows its scene with a symphony of love, which in regard is quite the opposite of how the movie projected initially.
The Forty Year Old Virgin. Big dance numbers in the film don’t need to justify themselves; they’re enjoyable just to watch the combination of choreography between the dancers and the camera. Typically, they just serve the purpose of having a fun set piece to enjoy at the end of a film.
To a certain extent, that’s true of “T.F.Y.O.V.” but it’s way more than that. It brilliantly describes the indescribable, namely, the way the lead character feels after having sex for the first time. We’ve waited for the entire movie for this inevitability, and once it happens the cleverness of using a euphoric dance scene set to “The Age of Aquarius” to express how he feels is sheer genius. But why take my word for it, watch:
There’s something about mary
Following their success from ‘Dumb and Dumber’, the Farrelly brothers made a film to be a blend of fun, love, and sex in a way only they could. A man gets a chance to meet up with his dream girl from high school, even though his date with her back then was a complete disaster. A simple plot that takes a hilariously complicated turn when an investigator tracking the girl also falls in love with her. The film deservedly got critical and commercial acclaim, winning itself several awards and nominations.
Leaning toward being an R-rated sitcom, this New Jersey flavored is both amusing and personal. Very few missteps in this debut behind the screen for Gordon-Levitt.
Gordon-Levitt has really delved into the nature of relationships and how we tend to make them for our own sake, be it porn, church, friends or family. This brings us to many odd moments were it is funny, yet also sort of pathetic. But the funny keeps our sympathy. Johansson is sweet, sexy, ‘Jersey’, and sexy. Oh, did I say that one twice? Both a foil and a mirror of Don Jon’s character in her own way, she inhabits the character with such cuteness that you really don’t see her flaws until Don Jon does.
There are some lazy plot choices at the end to resolve the title character’s problems in life. Wrapping it all with a lovely little bow was not satisfying, despite a couple of well-written scenes in the closing act. The catharsis never feels genuine.
But these are small complaints about a “first-time” writer/director (he’s actually done five shorts before this film). And the quibbles might partially be the fault of the studio, who generally demand happy endings. This honest and inside look shows that JGL has quite a bit of talent.
Review of Neighbors by some user on Quora –
Pretty good movie with some pretty good laughs.
I’m pretty selective with my comedies so I can’t really rate this higher than 3 stars. However, I recognize that this as an above average comedy. It establishes great settings within the fraternity house–I found the lighting of the party scenes to be intriguing and well done. The music also contributed a nice atmosphere to the overall raunchy fun of the movie.
Neighbors didn’t really take itself too seriously and all the same focused on the brotherhood aspect of fraternities to its benefit. I’ve talked to people who are part of fraternities and they definitely thought that part was executed well.
Going off of that, I was pleasantly surprised by both Zac Efron and Dave Franco. Perpetuating their pretty boy stereotype, they actually impressively conveyed the deeper motivations behind their characters and didn’t play them off as typical “douchebags”.
Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne play a believable couple with believable problems as they raise their young child. Overall, the dynamic between the married couple and the frat boys was done well.
The supporting characters, however, weakened the movie. I’m a fan of Christopher Mintz-Plasse, but I didn’t think that his character contributed much. Given his comedic prowess, he definitely could’ve played a bigger role. Otherwise, the movie could do without him. The subplot with Jimmy and his wife was unnecessary. They were forgettable and could have been easily replaced by any other comedic relief. Assjuice? Now that’s a memorable supporting comedic character.
Neighbors is a good movie that lives up to its positive reviews. It just didn’t have me laughing out loud that much with the exception of the references to Robert DeNiro, Samuel L. Jackson, and Batman. Hilarious.
Ian, a high school senior, wants to lose his virginity. He meets a woman online who wants him to drive to Knoxville where she promises sex. He steals his homophobic, macho brother’s GTO, and, with his two best friends, sets out to meet this woman. And as you would have guessed, they go crazy on the way. A film that is every similar in the ethos of movies like American Pie.
The late bloomer
Peter, a 27-year-old man, after the successful removal of a benign tumor resting against his pituitary gland, starts experiencing all the changes and effects of puberty over a three-week period. It is a fun film as long as it lasts.
